Ancient Olympia

the birthplace of the Olympic Games

Travel through time through the place that gave birth to the most important sports races of history, in Ancient Olympia.

Less than 4 hours from Athens, Ancient Olympia with its outdoor space and its archaeological museum is a unique excursion to history, culture and nature. The statue of Hermes of Praxiteles and Nike of Paionion are here, as well as innumerable souvenirs from the Modern Olympics. The ancient Olympia Stadium, a place that must be visited by each visitor together with the Temple of Hera, the Archaeological Museum (which is one of the most important in Greece), the Palaestra, the Bouleuterion, the Ancient Gymnasium and the Workshop of Pheidia.

The magical landscape that surrounds the Alfios River, the largest river in the Peloponnese, is ideal for walking along its shore.

The ancient site is quite impressive even if you do not have a tour guide with you still you can magine how grand this place was. Nero's private house in the site is quite an unexpected finding, to find out that even emperors traveled to see Ancient Olympia. There are not many words to describe it and there are enough books, guides and tours to give you more details as to what each and every part represented or you can read the inscriptions in front of the monuments. I would though recommend visiting the museum where they stored the status to make even a better view of how impressive this place was.
