MARATHONAS

Just a few kilometres south of the modern town of Marathon lies a 10 metre high burial mound (tumulus) where the bodies of 192 Athenians are buried who were killed at the Battle of Marathon defending their city from the enemy. Instead of their bodies being returned to their families for burial, which was the norm in the ancient times, their bodies were cremated and buried in this collective tomb as a huge mark of respect and honour. The site has a model of the battle and historical information. The museum offers a wealth of information helping the visitor understand this great battle along with many rare archaeological findings giving a glimpse of the glorious past of Ancient Greece. Explore Marathon and the beautiful scenery, while at the same time finding out more about the historic meaning of the place.

ANCIENT RHAMNOUS

Ancient Rhamnous is just a few kilometres from the famous battle site of Marathon and, also lesser known, it is is of no less significance historically. Rhamnous was a major, fortified town with an acropolis overlooking two harbours. Its strategic position opposite the island of Evia made it the perfect choice to receive suppliy ships bringing grain etc. to the city of Athens, especially during the Peloponnesian war. Just over half a kilometre inland, see also the site of the Sanctuary of Nemesis, the goddess of justice and divine vengeance. Dating back to the 6th century BC, this was the goddess’s preferred sanctuary and the reason why Nemesis was given the surname Rhamnous.
